News of the Weird:
A politician with a business degree…or at least a training certificate from Sizzler Steakhouses.
Mark Chelgren is a state senator in Iowa. In his biography on his official website, he listed a degree in business management from Forbco Management School in California.
The problem is that there is no accredited school in California by that name and the only organization by that name in California was a company that used to run restaurants.
Chelgren told the Des Moines Register that the school “ran Sizzler restaurants and a few other different restaurants.” He said he spent a few months in the training so that he could be promoted. “I had to take their school and their classes and they gave me their degree – as they termed it – and I have used that terminology,” he told the newspaper.
He later told the Associated Press, “I know they’ve changed that, because apparently a degree and a certificate are different. And I’m okay with their change, but there was never any intent at all to mislead anyone.”
It could be an honest mistake, but there is no mistaking that he didn’t make it through four years of college.
