Weekend Follies

And now these (mildly) funny tidbits to end the weekend…

Let’s Fight While We Talk

Berkeley, CA has long been known as a bastion of far left liberalism and, most recently, of violence to silence speakers who do not line up with the politically correct agenda.

As a way to try to bridge the gap between left and right, organizers set up a tent which would be a place where those of the left and those of the right could come together for a dialog, to talk about differences in a non-threatening way.

Unfortunately, recently a fist fight broke out between left and right—the tent didn’t quite work as intended.   “Talk Across the Divide” became “Talk and I’ll Hit You in The Divide”.  But, hey, it’s Berkeley.  What did you expect?

Politicians Trying To Avoid Jail (episode 1)

For US Rep. Corrine Brown from Florida is making news again.  The former Representative from Jacksonville, was known for making barely literate statements on the floor of Congress and for various ethical scandals during her more than two decades in Congress.  Brown was convicted earlier this year of 18 counts of fraud, primarily for setting up and raising funds for a sham charity

But the trial and whole legal exercise has been amusing if nothing else.  Though indicted for skimming more than $800,000 she set up a legal defense fund to raise money because she said she could not afford her legal bills.  Later, during her trial, she set up an ice cream stand outside the courtroom to pass out ice cream as a way to….well, no one was exactly sure.

After her conviction, and denial of a motion for a new trial, she has tried several tactics to delay sentencing.  She is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 16, but asked for a delay after last month’s hurricane saying her home was damaged and she needed time to make repairs.  When the judge said she hadn’t shown damage that caused a need for delay, she filed another motion asking for a delay because she had become depressed and her mental health should allow a delay.

Now 70 years old and after 24 years of representing, and now legally convicted of stealing from, residents of her very low income district, could anyone be disappointed if she spent a few years—even if it’s her last few years-in prison as compensation for the good life she enjoyed at her poor constituents expense?
