Mid-Week Quick Takes

From murder, election fraud and gender equity, we cannot help but wonder if the stories of the week are all related to a decline in the inherent logic in the populace of the country.

Solution to Rapid Rise In Murder Rate?

St. Louis has the highest murder rate in the country. Additionally, the murder rate has increased and is at a 50 year high.

St Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones has decided that the way to deal with that is to propose a $4 million budget cut to the police department, do away with 100 police positions and to close a city jail.

To coin a line from a famous comedian: “Here’s your sign.”

Gender Equality In Sports

Chelsea Mitchell was the fastest high school girl in Connecticut, but she lost four women’s state championship titles, two all-New England awards, and other honors—all to male runners who are transgender, choosing to identify as female. So Chelsea and three other female athletes filed a lawsuit to fight for their rights, but the case was dismissed and so the young women are taking their case to the U.S. Court of Appeals where they’re going to ask the court to recognize their right to fair competition—something that Title IX has provided to girls and women for 50 years.

LBGTQ activist and Women’s Tennis Association Hall of Famer Martina Navratilova recently came out in support of banning transgender athletes who had begun to produce testosterone and develop as men from competing in women’s sports because of their clearly unfair advantage.  “Letting men compete as women simply if they change their name and take hormones is unfair,” Navratilova said.

Oddly, other than Navratilova, most women’s rights advocates are silent. Yet there can be no doubt that “if we follow the science”, individuals whose bodies have produced testosterone for long periods have an inherent physical advantage. It is sad and, frankly, hard to understand how that is a position that can be debated.

Still Fighting 2020

Arizona Senate President Karen Fann hired a firm to do a recount of Arizona’s presidential election, even after a previous recount of ballots was completed. The firm, Cyber Ninjas, has no experience in election audits and did not bid on the contract but its Chief Financial Officer declared that Donald Trump won the election in Arizona before the audit even started. (How is THAT for objectivity?!-sort of reminds you of China, where the winner is announced before the ballots are counted)

The audit has gone on for months, making any objective observer wonder why it is taking so long?  Well, part of the reason is that the firm has decided (in some dope smoking party, apparently)  that it needs to look for traces of bamboo because they believe fake ballots were shipped from China, and they are looking for watermarks on ballots printed by the Federal government to detect fraud (even though states run their own elections, as mandated in the Constitution, and the Federal government does not ever print any ballots).

Apparently on release from the mental health facility or Area 51 (we aren’t exactly sure which), Cyber Ninjas did not find any fraud and so took voting machines off to a secret location to examine them further, possibly in violation of voting laws according to the Dept. of Justice, and the machines will not be able to be used in the next election.

The audit has been focused on Maricopa County, the largest county in the state, yet the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, which is controlled by Republicans, has been highly critical of the audit and formally asked for it to be stopped. Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer, a Republican who oversees elections for the county, has called wild allegations of conspiracies as “unhinged”.

This would be funny if it did not strike at the very heart of democracy in Arizona and the United States.  Recounts, and court cases that ultimately were decided at the Arizona Supreme Court are all ignored and have no credibility but Sen. Fann thinks that a firm with no election experience, looking for traces of bamboo is somehow going to be credible and find the real truth? The really sad thing is that not only does she hold public office but she is also not taking her medication.
