Politics: Virginia Voters Pull A Surprise

Virginia held elections yesterday for several statewide offices and for the State Assembly. Republicans swept the statewide races and won elections for Governor (beating the former Democratic Governor), Lt. Governor and Attorney General and also took control of the State Assembly from the previous Democratic majority.

Pundits will talk about the meaning and implications for the mid-term congressional elections next year but a year is an eternity in politics. But one thing that came up in exit polling that the fringe of the national Democratic Party will need to learn, is that Independents and moderate Democrats were tired of being told they are racist, sexist and hate immigrants. That was a large part of the reasons this normally Democratic-leaning state swept Republicans into office and, if it doesn’t change, will be an indicator of problems for Democrats in next year’s mid-terms.

Coincidently, just the day before, radical leftist Democratic member of Congress Cori Bush (D-MO) called fellow Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) “anti-Black, anti-child, anti-woman and anti-immigrant” because he would not agree to the largest spending bills in US history, two bills proposed by President Biden totaling $5.65 trillion. Whatever Sen. Manchin’s opposition, Bush did not help by labeling him basically the equivalent of Satan just because he opposed spending that she supported. And, yesterday, Virginia’s normally Democratic voters showed how much they disliked the name-calling.
