‘Today In History’ Note

On this day in 1967, the first popularly elected African-American US Senator is sworn in.

Edward W. Brooke III, a Republican from Massachusetts, was sworn in and served in the US Senate until 1979. Brooke helped write the Civil Rights Act of 1968 and was the first Senator to call for Nixon’s resignation during the Watergate Scandal.
