New York Sets Up Injection Locations-Not For Vaccines

New York City just opened a ‘Supervised Injection Site’ where drug addicts and go to shoot up and be sure that someone is there to make sure they do so safely, have new needles and do not accidently overdose.

So, said another way, New York City is making sure that people feel safe committing what is still a crime in New York City. There was a time in our society when that was called “aiding and abetting a crime”.

The Word “Looting” Is Racist?!

In the wake of several ‘incidents’ of organized smash and grab robberies across California this week, the San Diego police department said it would not use the word “looting” because that was a racist term, and would use the term “organized robberies” instead.

This Is How Progressive Justice Reform Looks

By now, we have all heard of the incident in Waukesha, WI where a man plowed his vehicle into a small town Christmas parade, killing six people and wounding over fifty others, some critically.

The defendant, Darrell Brooks Jr., has a long history of violent criminal activity going back years and involving multiple convictions in multiple states. In early November, he was arrested again on a domestic violence charge.

John Chisholm is the Milwaukee County District Attorney who has championed “progressive justice reform” and has widely bragged that he was an early leader in the movement. His office recommended $1000 bail for Brooks in his most recent violent crime charge and Brooks was released just last Friday, two days before he plowed into the parade….after reportedly fleeing another domestic violence dispute.

A felon with a long history of violent crime, let out on bail of $1000 (why was he allowed bail at all?!) and within 48 hours, that felon had been involved in another domestic violence dispute and using his vehicle for a mass murder.  THAT is progressive justice reform.

Sports And Human Rights

If you have been watching the news recently, you have heard of Peng Shuai, the internationally ranked Chinese women’s tennis player who disappeared recently, after accusing a high ranking member of the Chinese government and Communist Party of sexual assault.

Worth noting is a striking difference in reaction to Chinese human rights abuses.

A Vote For Sanity

The House voted yesterday to censure Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ).  As part of the censure, Gosar was removed from all committee assignments that he currently has.

Gosar became only the 24th member in history to be censured, the last one being in 2010. Gosar was brought before the House to be censured because he has posted an animated video, on his official House of Representatives social media account, of him killing another member of Congress and beating President Biden.

No one should even joke about killing a co-worker. I certainly would be fired immediately if I made a video of killing a co-worker and beating another, how much more should we hold higher standards for members of Congress who (at least theoretically) is supposed to represent the best of us.

Republicans in Congress should be ashamed for refusing to reprimand Gosar for such disgusting behavior. Another case of “if he is ‘our guy’ we will overlook anything”. That has to change!

How Has This Behavior Become Acceptable?

We have a problem. Well, maybe more than one but the biggest one is the nature of politics. Not only the highly partisan nature of US politics, but seemingly that a growing number of us have begun to hate anyone that does not agree with us, for no other reason than they do not agree. In a democracy, that is dangerous and means, at a fundamental level, the people that hate those that disagree actually do not believe in a democracy where people are free to express, and vote for, their opinions.

Can We Stop With The Absurd Hyperbole?

Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who lost his starting job to Blaine Gabbert and then left the NFL rather than take a salary cut, weighed in over the weekend on the NFL draft, saying that the NFL draft was like a slave auction.

We know, and have historical records, of the life and living conditions of slaves in the US. For comparison, in 2020 Kaepernick’s net worth was estimated at $22 million, his 2020 income was estimated at well over $10 million and below are pictures of his ‘slave quarters’ from public records (the pool, in ground hot tub and outbuildings are not pictured). I also assume that Kaepernick does not clean his own house but has someone he hires to do that for him. Near as I recall, slaves were not able to hire help to do their work for them.

Second Black Secretary of State On Critical Race Theory

The first woman and first African-American National Security Advisor and the second Black Secretary of State, Condolleezza Rice, commenting on critical race theory:

“I would like black kids to be completely empowered, to know that they are beautiful in their blackness, but in order to do that I don’t have to make white kids feel bad for being white.”

The Ends Should Not Justify The Means

The premise of Thinking Man’s Politics is that we should think when we look at issues or topics in society and politics. If we do, we put principles over a person, and we put ideas over popular trends. And let us be candid, if our ‘principles’ change depending on the person or party involved, they are not ‘principles’ but slight preferences.

In this author’s view, there are two primary problems in our political and social discourse:  one being the habit of ignoring anything negative if it’s “our guy” and ignoring anything positive if it’s “the other side’s guy” and the second is the desire to win at any cost and, often, no matter how big or small the issue (in other words, the mindset that the end justifies the means). Both are destructive to our politics and, more basically, to our social fabric.  They are not new, but seem to be taken to more extremes these days and in times past.
